Former UK NCA officer ordered to forfeit $2.4 million over theft of 50 Silk Road bitcoin

A former officer with the UK National Crime Agency, Paul Chowles, has been hit with a confiscation order of £1,810,678.93 after stealing 50 bitcoin from wallets seized in the Silk Road 2.0 investigation, according to a Sept. 30 statement from the Crown Prosecution Service. The coins were worth £59,409 at the time they were taken but the amount assessed against him rose as bitcoin gained in value. The CPS said the order was made under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and includes the value of 30 bitcoin recovered earlier in the case. Chowles, 44, from Bristol, had already admitted theft, transferring criminal property, and concealing criminal property. He was dismissed by the NCA on July 11, 2025, and sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on July 16 to five years and six months in prison. Court and prosecution material say Chowles moved the funds in May 2017 from a wallet tied to Thomas White, then broke the bitcoin into smaller amounts, routed them through Bitcoin Fog, and later spent or withdrew proceeds through Cryptopay and Wirex accounts. The case later shifted after Merseyside Police learned of the missing bitcoin in 2022, leading to his arrest.

Dormant wallet moves 20.43 BTC after 15.4 years, with Arkham tracing funds to early Slush Pool payouts

A Bitcoin wallet that had been inactive since May 2011 has moved 20.43 BTC worth $1.7 million, according to monitoring cited by Bitcoin News. The transfer ended a 15.4-year period of dormancy. Arkham tracking linked the coins to payout distributions from Braiins, formerly known as Slush Pool, when the holdings were worth roughly $3 to $4. The BTC received by the wallet on May 1 and May 8, 2011 was later split and sent to SegWit addresses, with transaction fees coming in at less than $1. The funds have not been sent to any known exchange deposit address so far. Earlier transfers tied to the same wallet were also labeled as related to Mt. Gox and Silk Road, both described in the source as common channels in 2011. Separately, the Mt. Gox trustee still holds about 34,500 BTC, and the deadline for creditor filings is Oct. 31, 2026.

Onchain Lens said a whale wallet moved 20.43 BTC after holding the coins for 15.4 years. The bitcoin was originally acquired at roughly $3 to $4 per coin, putting the current transfer value at about $1.7 million. Based on those figures, the position is estimated to be sitting on roughly $1.72 million in profit, with gains of more than 2,000,000%. The wallet itself was created 15 years ago. Onchain data cited in the report also shows that the address had historical interactions with Mt. Gox and Silk Road. The move was flagged by Odaily as a whale activity update.
